Social opportunities for young people

One of the important reasons for opening schools is to allow young people to meet up with their friends.

The need for increasing their educational opportunities and the need for child care are other important reasons to open schools. However for especially the primary age children, going back to school will be about being with other kids again.

This will make social distancing, and indeed education, very difficult.

Providing organised play and social settings for children to meet might help to practice social distancing habits and provide much needed fun.

Parents are doing a fantastic job at keeping children involved in activities and most are engaging with some kind of distance learning but 'missing their pals' is what they tell me is the biggest problem for my class.

Can we start with play, outdoor learning and sports?

Why the contribution is important

Schools can't go back as they were but children need to meet with other children and learn to play in new ways.

This should definitely be considered. If they don’t go back to school until August, 5 months is a big chunk of a 5/6 year old’s life. We don’t know what the long term consequences of losing this social interaction will be for them.
