  This should always have been illegal and it's a wonder it is not! It is disgusting . I was taught that this is not acceptable. Also not dropping chewing gum on the ground. We need cleaner more hygienic streets and spaces.

  In singapore you get caned and jailed for posession of chewing gum. Cleanest place i've ever visited, and folk aren't depressed there or subject to tyranny. Should be banned. I will say though, you ever tried to smash a 25 minute 5k out without taking a quick gob to the side of the road... Bit less practical to enforce that one

  Agree, spitting is a disgusting habit and is very dangerous in a pandemic.
  Please prosecute footballers! They ALWAYS spit and its a very bad influence.

  Agree! Just as a comment why do men do this?
  
  What would they think if women routinely did this?
  
  I have never understood why people (usually men) spit or feel it is acceptable to urinate in streets for that matter.

  Totally agree. I have been adhering to the Lockdown and now stopped going for a short walk for exercise as twice I have been caught in the trajectory of someone's spit whilst they are cycling past. if they have to spit you have to question if they have an infection of some sort, Covid-19 or not

  sounds farcical, but it’s obvious in a big city, other cities in the world have beautiful clean pavements. a workman who passes my flat spits on the pavement everyday, so much I had to go out and clean it! We need to enable community police to do work like this too, but for some reason we can’t seem to control people or politely ask them to desist. I remember when Glasgow was quite nice.

  Totally Support the idea of enforcing this rule. Fines should be a minimum of £100 and higher. I note some comments are around impractical but we should not let that deter us from implementing it.

  Spitting is a disgusting and anti social habit and given the present circumstances - any/all spitting directed at another person or not should be banned and the person doing it should receive a significant fine
