Step Up Mandatory Mask Wearing

First, I applaud the message that we should NOT stigmatise the young, asthmatic, autistic, dementia sufferers or others who cannot and should not wear a mask.

However, evidence around the world shows mass mask wearing WORKS.

Czech Republic have 24 cases per million.

Levels in Austria have dropped 90%

We need to get our heads out of the sand and covered in masks. Even if you buy into the belief they are only useful if you are contagious, this is an ASYMPTOMATIC virus so you cannot know if you are contagious.

If everyone (barring health reasons) wore facial coverings, then everyone who is contagious would de facto be wearing a facial covering.

You've done well this week Nicola in admitting what the UK government will not and advising we should wear facial coverings in enclosed spaces. Now is the time to step up and mandate facial coverings for the majority of people in every single outdoor situation. This should be the key cornerstone of our recovery from lockdown, the very foundation on which we simply HAVE to build from.

Why the contribution is important

As above, without it, we will have a second wave if we remove restrictions

I fully agree with the above and ask for mandatory mask wearing. I have a job classed as critical but am told no special ppe simply wash hands.
    Observation.
I have been working in the field since the start and no public toilets or hand-wash facilities!
    Masks please
It's spread through the air and by droplets from breath

I've watched people in masks in the supermarkets and outdoors. A bigger waste of money, resource and effort I cannot imagine. People keep touching he mask, they move it to cough or have a cigarete (no joke!). The things will be truly disgusting in not time and riddled with COVID - and then with each touch, the virus gets passed to hands and anything the wearer touches. Ban people who have a cough in public.

I agree, wearing a mask seems like common sense

It appears the governments of all UK nations think the public in the UK are too stupid to use them properly.

Some won't as jamiehamy states, but it is proven to work in other countries, and most people will use them properly. Don't throw out a good idea because a minority won't get it right. We are being told to stay at home, most do, some will not conform, but it doesn't mean you abandon the policy.

The proof is in the results other countries are having which the UK is not. We need to stop thinking that we are superior and doing our own thing. We need to look at other nations and do what is working. This does not make us weak it makes us intelligent.

UK Governments and Scottish Gov. were worried about cost... now worried about losing face introducing it late... well that horse has bolted, we have done everything too late. They now need to swallow their pride and superior attitude and listen to other countries and their experiences, and not just when it suits their own agendas.

Yes, the evidence says masks help lower the spread. They send out a signal that this virus is a serious threat to all of us. Also give some reassurance to people who have no choice about going into shops or public transport to see staff who are in close contact with lots of people daily wearing them.

I think the big problem Jamie is that the Government keep dodging the issue. If it was state mandated and a massive program of education was rolled out, I bet those daft mistakes would disappear. Sometimes people do need told how to properly use equipment they're unsure of.
