Support Active Travel

Follow the example of other countries and encourage the population at large to use Active Travel by implementing imediate temporary pedestrian and cycle ways which can be formalised as and when the situation allows the work to be done. Use the opportunity to galvanise a re-think of the way we use our towns and cities and reduce the use of motorised traffic. People are seeing what it is like to enjoy cleaner air and safer walking and cycling spaces and there is more support now than there has ever been for radical action for change.

Why the contribution is important

See https://www.facebook.com/brutofficiel/videos/686652731904141/. Other places are encouraging the widespread use of the bicycle as a means of safe urban transport that lends itself to social distancing. The advent of e-bikes allows this form of transport to be used by a wider range of people to the benefit of all. A wider availability of safe cycling and pedestrian pathways would lead to improved mental and physical health of the population, which in itself will support recovery from the pandemic. We cannot keep increasing the number of cars on the roads indefinitely and this is the ideal time to make a major change with broader public support.

There needs to be a review of our towns and cities and how the share of the space that is given to active travel and motor vehicles. To enable this to take place real tangible investment is required. The annual spending by the Scottish Government on cycling would only fund 1 mile of the M74 extension. There is a far better return on investment if money was to be spent on widening footpaths and creating a joined up route of safe segregated cycling infrastructure.
