Take equity positions in key industries.

Any payment to large businesses should be considered as an equity investment in the enterprise. If the Scottish people through the Scottish Government wants to support Scottish business then they should do so by equity injections. This would allow the people of Scotland to take the risks and rewards from Scottish business. These businesses would be important to the Scottish economy and their future success would be important to all of us.

There are a number of ways to make an equity investment from direct equity to convertible loan stock.

Why the contribution is important

Rather than be accused of providing cheap loans or grants to the wealthy people who own businesses, the SG on behalf of the Scottish People would be making direct investments in the major employers in Scotland.

    Agree completely. The challenge would be maintaining and managing those equity positions. Governments are usually not good at that and it would require a careful plan and corrdination that maybe we don’t have right now

    Might be worth considering loan guarantees for bank loans, held against Scottish Investment bank Consol Bonds.
