Tax rise

I would support an increase in income/council taxes for higher earners.

Why the contribution is important

The economic impact of the lockdown will be enormous and public services will be adversely affected. Households which can afford a tax rise (I consider mine as one of them) should contribute more in order to ensure that the government can still deliver good quality public services (including the health service whose importance is so evident now) and support for people in need.

Appreciate the sentiment & willingness but doubt if it will be welcomed as we already tax higher earners more than rest of UK

You can't be serious, surely? Schools aren't in session. The NHS is barely being used in Scotland. Hardly anyone is driving. Why on earth would we need a rise in taxes? Why don't we start with your income? Didn't think so..

The economy and the NHS has suffered from Westminster Cuts and Tax giveaways to the better off. I expect Westminster to print money devalue the pound and make the poor and the NHS suffer again. Scotland has small and limited powers in tax raising and should use them. Should insist that Westminster returns a greater proportion of Scotland Tax instead of spending it on vanity projects in London and the South East of England.

Schools aren't in session but school staff are still being paid. Are you suggesting that we stop paying public service staff? The NHS is barely being used in Scotland - really???

Businesses will suffer and the income from their taxes will be lower. For example, how much tax do you think events like the Edinburgh International Festival and Fringe, and also from tourists would bring - income which will be lost this year?

I am only suggesting a rise for higher earners who can afford to pay a bit more tax, not a rise for everybody. I would be happy to do so myself in order to ensure that we live in a more equal society with public services which benefit all.

Higher earners might consider that since they already pay the highest proportion of tax -
Basic rate taxpayers pay an average of 9.7% of income (55% of Scots pay no income tax)
Higher rate taxpayers pay average of 21.7% of income
Additional Rate taxpayers pay average of 38% of income

I totally agree that those of us with higher incomes can afford to pay a bit more in taxes to fund a welfare state that delivers excellent services to all. This would then enable those working , for example, in our NHS and care services to be given the higher salaries they deserve . The same applies, of course, to many of those who work within our public services. We should think of the well-being of our society and not just of the well-being of ourselves.

I will not welcome a tax rise being the most taxed part of country and one of most taxed countries in world. Tax is only legal if used for correct purposes given the state of our NHS while government pursue Brexit trident and redecorating palaces this is not the case in UK. Who is going to pay this tax rise anyway? Almost all industry will be struggling other than the key workers many people have taken pay cuts been furloughed or face job losses.
