Tight control

Keep the cautious approach to lockdown. Do as others have done with far greater success because they acted so swiftly (e.g. New Zealand) Ensure that anyone entering the country goes into quarantine for 14 days whether they arrive by air, boat, plane or train. Test, trace and isolate. Find out about immunity levels and whether those who have had the virus can catch it again or pass it on. Develop a vaccine or other effective treatment. These measures will be necessary until a vaccine or treatment is found. Only start to ease the lockdown when R is as close to zero as possible. Implement lockdown again if the R rises. Keep the quarantine measures in place until the rest of the world has R=0. Use masks and gloves and take temperatures. In other words, keep doing as you have been doing. You have my trust so far.
When easing lockdown, base this on human needs for food, health and shelter first. Then it would be useful to create a hierarchy of essential occupations and those at lowest risk to be allowed out of lockdown first.
We cannot return to the old systems and economic models. Now is the ideal time to make radical changes and implement a well being / circular economy. This must be the time to make the necessary changes, not only because of Corona but also the underlying 6th (man made) mass extinction which will dwarf Corona in terms of global impact. Let’s be sure to be doing the big thinking and making the radical changes we need as we come out of this pandemic.

Why the contribution is important

It supports the cautious position taken by the Scottish Government and it urges courageous action to make radical changes.
