Travelling short distances by car for exercise

Be good to be able to travel short distances to take exercise in different places. Could perhaps be restricted to 20 miles or own local authority area.

Why the contribution is important

Improved mental health, could allow greater social distancing as people not all in local streets and parks.

agree with this but not by LA - there are such massive variations in size and type of LA then not equitable - should be based on mileage

Here in the Highlands we have so many wonderful places to walk, but they are hard to walk to. They are not 'destinations' so would be unlikely to ever be crowded, but it would enhance the quality of life for so many.

Excellent idea, and eliminates the unfair postcode lottery where the ability to exercise in a park depends on living within walking distance of one.

This I feel would benefit people allowing people to find less densely populated area for exercise without compromising social distancing

It would be totally abused and difficult to police

To travel to other outdoor spaces will ease some of the walking ‘congestion’ that tends to happen locally. If car parks were re-opened for reserves and forest walks the spaces available could be restricted to keep within social distancing guidelines.

I would agree. It often occurs to me when I'm doing some essential shopping, if I could drive another few miles would allow me access to areas I could walk

Why? Walking, running or cycling around the local area without using a car is just as physically beneficial as exercise after driving. Urban architecture has great detail and variety and offers exercise challenges with Fartlek intervals between lamp posts, road junctions, etc.. Does a gentle country stroll really qualify as exercise?

+1 for this. I live in Leith and would feel safer if I could drive to the beach and go out windsurfing where there is plenty of space then go for a run or walk in water of Leith which is always packed with people running, cycling or walking the dogs.

Allow travel within an hours drive or 40 miles for exercise. If it needs to be policed then set up number plate recognition cameras and send out fines if a car is more than 40 miles from the owner's registered address.

I support this idea but short drive only (25 mins or less for example). Living in a relatively rural market town that has all local countryside and beach car parks closed has resulted in hugely crowded local paths where social distancing is impossible - it’s not just cities that have this problem. Closing these car parks was an appropriate reaction to beauty spot crowding on the first weekend of lockdown when people were not well informed of the law, guidelines or benefits of social distancing. Wind the clock on a few months and these closures no longer benefit the reduction of the infection rate, in fact they appear to be risking it increasing. Trust your citizens to do the right thing.

    Good idea!
I used to go to the gym once a week to cycle but I live in a rural area with only bendy, 60 mph roads and I don't feel safe enough to cycle outdoors (and due to foot problems can't go walking). If we are allowed to travel a certain distance for exercise, I would certainly drive somewhere to exercise in a designated (or quieter) cycle area.

Also, I agree that it will ease pressure on parks in towns and cities. It is not possible for 1 million Glaswegians to go and visit their local parks and still stay 2 m away from each other!

Yes! The city centres are currently congested with walkers who are not allowed to go elsewhere. How is that better than allowing those with cars to go a bit further out where it's so much easier to stay away from others?
