Participants recognised the need for employers to understand the necessity for young people to have opportunities to learn skills for the employment market, but they also felt that this was not just about employers, it is also about education systems being able to teach skills for employment and not just to pass exams.

Young people today need to learn the skills they will use in jobs of the future, not the skills that have been necessary for current jobs or jobs in the past. Education systems and employers need to work together to achieve this.

Two other ideas that should be linked here as these are part of learning skills for life:

    • Equality for young people benefit sign-on
    • Schools should teach and model democracy in classrooms

This is important because young people need to be prepared to enter into employment and have learned the skills they will need there.
