Living wage to apply to all people regardless of age

It is only fair that young people should get the same wage for doing the same job but not getting the same wage undermines the work they are doing and sends the message that their work is less valuable just because of their age.

Why the contribution is important

This is important for recognition and equality for younger people.

Idea from Fairer Scotland Dumfries Planning Event:

(This was also discussed in the Income and Employment and Welfare themes.)

It’s wider than just Modern Apprentices - it’s all jobs, as wages are age dependent. Tiered wages create a system whereby your value is based on your age. The minimum wage should be for everyone. There should be just one living wage definition instead of different government definitions of the living and minimum wage. This is linked to take up of FE and HE in that young people who are poorer cannot afford to work part-time and therefore are more inclined to pursue full-time employment rather than education.

This is important because, if two people are doing exactly the same job, they should get the same wage regardless of age.
