School to teach and model democracy in classrooms to give students experience of participation

Schools are great places to learn about and model democracy to give students their first experience of participation. This could for example, be through Youth Parliaments. Young people need to experience that they have a say and that having a say makes a difference. Schools should model democracy both in classrooms and in the way that the school is governed.

Schools should also make sure that students are informed about the world and learn about current affairs and how it impacts on their lives, globally, nationally and locally. They should also learn and practice influencing so they can gain confidence.

Why the contribution is important

Young people must learn that they are citizens with influence, and they must learn about what it going on in the world around them that they may need or want to exert influence on.
