Choice over rent or buy for all

Everyone should have choices about where they live. Some people want to rent, as it gives flexibility and freedom from maintenance. Tenancies should be longer, with incentives for good tenants, thus giving options.

Others want to buy but can’t afford to in their communities. Also provision should be made for young people so that they have options.

Why the contribution is important

This is important as it gives people options to stay or to move in response to life, jobs and allows everyone the possibility of affordable, secure housing.

Idea from Fairer Scotland Midlothian Planning Event:

People should also have a choice of who they live with, for example people with learning difficulties; this decision is often taken for them.

People on benefits are often housed in the most deprived areas, with little choice over this or the way in which benefits are paid.

The choice to rent is a really important one, in a society where buying your own home is seen as a key sign of success.
For many, the 'choice' is between renting and being homeless. We desperately need more social homes for rent. The problem is, that's the most expensive option for government. But if we're committed to social justice and a home for all, that money needs to be found.

Idea from Fairer Scotland Dumfries Planning Event:

We need the right, high quality housing stock in the right place. There should be more shared equity and shared ownership schemes. These can help people move into the private sector and own their own house.

Housing needs to be close to infrastructure and amenities – i.e. shops, parks.
