More social housing

There should be more social housing and housing providers, and councils should be building more and be able to borrow against their existing housing stock. It was also felt that people with local links should be given a priority for social housing.

Why the contribution is important

More affordable housing should be available and social housing provides an affordable alternative to private rented housing or buying. Some communities are dying because there are no young people moving in, as they can’t afford to. Social housing creates more sustainable communities. Social housing also keeps money in the system and community, rather than going off to private investors.

    From Fairer Scotland Inverness Event:

Sometimes houses are in the wrong places – often locations where there is no need, or in areas without transport links to jobs, or with bad social problems.

Work to regenerate areas, with communities, is needed, working to improve all aspects of the area – just sorting out housing will not solve problems.

It was also felt that people with local links should be given a priority for social housing.

This is important as more affordable housing should be available and social housing provides an affordable alternative to private rented housing or buying.

It is also an opportunity to get communities working well and can helps manage wider issues and end the stigma associated with council housing.

Idea from Fairer Scotland Midlothian Planning Event:

More council houses in the right place with jobs, infrastructure and community support

If there were more housing associations to housing stock, more community people would be involved and look after the housing better. Profits would be put back into the community and provide benefit for the whole community.

The councils could pilot some areas of housing for this and see how it goes. There are social enterprises that could take this on.
