Social activities to prevent young people drifting away from rural areas

More activities are needed locally to provide a social life and things that people want to do. There is only so much entertainment that the landscape can provide. People want shops, nightlife and things to do. This is particularly true for young people.

Why the contribution is important

This is important to attract people to remote areas, particularly where there are skills gaps [such as with senior NHS staff] and to stop young people drifting away.

Idea from Fairer Scotland Dumfries Planning Event:

We need to be confident to invest in young people and their aspirations. Retaining young people and growing them locally with support like apprenticeships. And also provide preparation for young people to go to university or work away, giving them skills for living on their own. We should be encouraging young people to leave their rural setting broaden their horizons, gain experiences and come back again. And also encouraging young people from outside the rural setting to come and experience rural life. It should be a two way process for gaining experiencing.
