When people are out of work there should be a focus on people rather than sanctions

When people are out of work there should be a person-centered approach to helping them back into work. This should look at their skills, interests and abilities and any barriers to them working, and then offer them support back to work. A system that makes people apply for too many jobs does no good for people. It also wastes the time of employers as they get lots of applications from unqualified people who don’t want the jobs they are offering.

A story was told about someone seeking work who had limited literacy so applying for jobs was hard and very few jobs were suitable. By focusing his applications, and allowing him to apply for less but suitable jobs, he was quickly able to find the right job and reduce his stress.

Why the contribution is important

The focus should be getting people back to work not on the sanctions. Getting people back to work improves their lives and reduces the welfare bill.
