Benefits assessments need trained assessors and accessible locations, and the criteria should be set on a fairer basis by a Scottish Agency

When assessing claims for disability benefits, several expert psychiatrists can be overruled by the contractor carrying out these assessments.

Bureaucrats should not get the final say. It is far more difficult now to get to tribunal; it should be easier to appeal.

There is a huge amount of pressure on Citizens Advice Bureaux and on the Consultation and Advocacy Promotion Service in Midlothian, and their tight budgets mean they can only help so many.

There should be more organisations to support appeals, take cases to tribunals, and do the paperwork for these. Companies are making huge profits off the assessments, and have targets to get people off benefits.

Perhaps in the meantime, under the Smith Commission, assessment criteria can be devolved from the DWP to a Scottish agency to make it fairer.

Why the contribution is important

This is important to make sure assessments are fair and allow people to access the benefits they are entitled to.

Idea from Fairer Scotland Dumfries Planning Event:

At the moment, the gaps between Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) and everybody else is becoming wider and the potential to fall between the gaps is increasing. Why could they not give the benefits to councils more- reduce duplication by combining DWP and local council employability services and training organizations. There is lots of duplication and a lack of accountability. There should be specialist staff for claimants with special needs.

Benefit criteria should be consistent and the goal posts shouldn’t be shifted.

People with learning disabilities should get more money. Rather have a decent rise once every 5 years than a really small rise every year.
