Living wage should be for everyone who is working

There should be a living wage for everyone who is working. The living wage is what is needed to live, and so people should not be working for less than this. This will reduce working poverty and the need for benefits to top up wages.

There should also not be different rates for different work -  for example on an age basis. It should be the same rate for the job for all people. A suggestion for extending the living wage includes requiring the living wage on public procurement contracts.

Social enterprises should also be encouraged to see the benefits of the living wage, with their model of delivering more than just financial value. Government should take every opportunity to promote, mandate and pay the living wage.

Why the contribution is important

It is fair to pay everyone a basic wage that they can live on, and it is only fair that this is for everyone. This stops people working whilst also being in poverty and claiming benefits. It is also important as paying the living wage can bring benefits (including financial benefits) to employers and these should be made widely known.
