Travel allowance for benefits claimants in rural areas

The more remote you are, the more difficult it is to balance on benefits as the travel is more expensive and they have fewer services to take advantage of (libraries, for example).

There is a mismatch between rural and urban issues.

Why the contribution is important

This is important because costs can be higher in certain areas, with services less available. We should recognise that it takes more money to do things in rural areas.

Idea from Fairer Scotland Dumfries Planning Event:

This is a big issue for people who are in far flung locations; job centre in Dumfries was asking people to come down twice a month, and they had to pay it up front and then get it back, they were going without food. People being asked to go to Carlisle rather than Dumfries for assessments that should be local, and where there are expenses they shouldn’t have to pay in advance. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) should have a contract for this and pay it themselves, in the same way the NHS does. Timings as well, takes an hour on the bus and you have to hang round in the cold for hours.

More transport and better services for people to get to A to B. Make public transport free- the people with loads of money have cars. Elderly, disabled, people on benefits, and children use buses and don’t pay anyway. More rural bus services- bus timetables mean can’t spend any length of time in Dumfries.

The more remote you are, the more difficult it is to manage on benefits, as the travel is more expensive and there are fewer services to take advantage of, such as libraries. Issues in rural areas are not the same as in urban areas. We should recognise that it takes more money to do things in rural areas. Rather than a travel allowance, people could be given bus passes to allow them to look for work. This could even be just for off-peak travel.

This is important as it helps people looking for work and geographical constraints disadvantage people and limit their access to work and services.
