Weight restriction per tag to protect 2-3 Sea Winter Salmon

Our District Salmon Fishery Board has issued for several years some recommendations that are now followed by a large majority of anglers and that are the rules on many beats : no killing of Spring fish, all hen fish must be returned, small cock fish (less than 10lbs) can be kept from June onwards, coloured fish must be returned. It is perfectly justifiable as

  • Spring stocks are under pressure
  • hen fish are the most crucial in terms of reproduction(1 killed hen =8000 eggs on average)
  • multi sea winter salmon(2-3 WS) are real survivors with robust genes pools and if protected they will hopefully breed strong new stocks.

I have concerns that with the introduction of tags more hen fish will be killed as well as large multi sea winter salmon. An Atlantic salmon over 20lbs is a marvel of nature and should be protected.
If a tagging system has to be implemented, I would personally like to see a “weight restriction” per tag and no tag issue in the Spring.
Thank you for taking the time reading this.

Why the contribution is important

It is not just the number of salmon, but the quality of our Atlantic Salmon stock that we must protect.
