Improving healthy food choices for children and young people

We need a national approach to provide more positive associations, attracttions and reinforcements of healthy food choices for children and young people.

This could include:

-  the outlawing of unhealthy food availability in machines in schools and other social venues where young people meet

- further improvements in food labelling with use of traffic light systems to warn of dangers

- hiding sugar products as we have done for tobacco

- tax increases on sweets and sugary drinks which we know are damaging the health of our young people.

Why the contribution is important

Food habits established in early life are hard to break. Obesity is killing people prematurely and, unless we make radical changes, the problems it causes will increase.
