Diversity in local government

We know that traditional means do not bring diversity to local councils ; they do not mirror the diversity we see in our communities . Why don’t we have a few positions which are solely for those who are traditionally under represented . And instead of being elected , we should invite ‘community voices’ to sit . This could be done jury selection style , this would ensure those who normally might not consider sitting in council , might take up the opportunity and it would introduce new voices and opinions into the process .

Why the contribution is important

A lot of people feel that they haven’t anything to contribute , some feel it’s the same people who put themselves forward for this type of thing . Society values the role that everyone contributes to the jury system , why not reflect this value in council business . I think people would respond positively to being offered such an opportunity .

This would allow a better diversity of community membership. Our local democracy is often far from democratic being controlled by single parties for generations. Self serving and party political interests then hold sway over local community interest and benefit.
