What does Government by the people mean?

It does not just mean casting your vote at elections or referendums. The label 'local democracy' is subject to interpretation. Reality means that the power does not lie with communities.   It really it lies with those two structures, despite the ideas that are imposed, however well intended, by National or Local Government through e.g., Community Engagement?

I believe that legitimate 'local democracy' cannot happen without tackling the barriers that already exist in the current structures of power. Perhaps if thr developed 'National Standards of Community Engagement were actually put into practice by the relevant authorities and organisations then there could be, perhaps, a chance for things to be changed.

There is too much to say in respect of this because it would take too long. My experience in South Ayrshire has been very bad and five years in has still not been resolved.

Why the contribution is important

Why is my idea important?

Because my experience has demonstrated that - consultation; listening; acknowledging local experience and knowledge is not given any real meaningfull consideration.

Evidence that a council officer has breached the Human Rights Act; The Equalities Act and has publicly told lies is available if required.

This topic is the starting point for this consultation. Rather than trying to further democratise the structures we have, have a debate, possibly through a People's Convention, to arrive at where the preferred level of decision making resides. This will then help to shape the services provided by national, regional and district bodies.

I agree. The public needs to determine what level of decision-making it wants to have power over and the appropriate structures put in place to enable effective decisions. Citizens' assemblies seem to work quite effectively elsewhere. The main thing is to ensure that, whatever body is put in place, it manages to be truly representative of the community.
