Impact of not paying care staff when isolating

Care staff, like everyone else, were advised to isolate when they had symptoms or were in contact with someone who had symptoms. However if they did isolate they were not paid, receiving Statutory Sick Pay only, a significant loss of earnings. Even when the Scottish Government put in place funding to allow staff to be paid normal wages some employers did not pay this until after they were able to claim this from councils meaning that for weeks sometimes months workers were put into financial hardship.

Why the contribution is important

Care workers therefore needed to chose between isolating and losing money or going to work, hoping their symptoms, or those of a household member, were not Covid symptoms.
How much did that contribute to the spread of the virus in care settings?
