Using assistive technology Apps

The Life I Want is a Public Social Partnership in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde area.  The partnership came out of the closure of day care centres across Glasgow and gives people with learning disabilities a platform to engage with and influence policy at a local level.

In our health workstream we have been trialling the use of an app called My Health Guide, which has already been licenced by an NHS Trust in England.  We feel that this is a good tool which would benefit not only people with learning disabilities but anyone with more complex health care.

This particular app lets the user "share" information about their health care and other support needs with people they choose- support workers or doctors. This means everyone involved in a persons care can be kept up to date with appointments or other information.  This saves someone having to remember to tell several different people the same information.  The app acts as a diary, sets reminders about appointments and when to take medicines and can also record information as sound or video clips.

We need to find and encourage the use of technology that helps people keep track of information about their health and the care they receive.  We think this is a good example of the type of thing that could be of great benefit.

Why the contribution is important

We need to find and encourage the use of technology that helps people keep track of information about their health and the care they receive.

We need to find ways to help people communicate.  Apps like these are perfect for people who might have communication issues.  In an emergency situation, for example, being able to show a nurse or doctor a recording of what you need and what is important to you can save people a lot of additional distress.  This also helps NHS staff provide the best standard of care possible.
