Community benefit funds are collective in nature. They do not address individual harm. Where a development results in measurable devaluation of property, loss of trade, or reduced business viability, it is not sufficient to rely on general community funding as an indirect offset. Those who bear a disproportionate burden should not be expected to absorb that loss for the wider public good.
The refreshed Good Practice Principles should recognise the right to fair compensation where material impact can be evidenced. A transparent, accessible and enforceable mechanism should be in place to assess claims objectively and provide appropriate redress.
A just transition must be genuinely just. Protecting individuals from uncompensated financial harm is essential to maintaining public trust and social licence for renewable development.

Local residents who suffer negative impact to their health and well being should also be heavily compensated, however this at present is difficult to quantify, although evidence of such damage and studies proving this are beginning to flood in.
