A Scottish Ofgem

A large number of projects in Scotland are affected by decisions by Ofgem (for example links to islands).

These decisions are rightly made with decisions about finance. However no consideration is given to the benefits of these links to local communities in such as regeneration, long term goals.

Having a Scottish Ofgem would allow for these factors to be considered in developments. Although these should not mean that unsuitable schemes are implemented it would allow for specific Scottish issues to be considered.

Why the contribution is important

Decisions made in Glasgow often ignore issues that effect Inverness.

Similarly decisions made in London are often irrelevant to those made in Scotland.

Having decisions made in Scotland should allow for better local accountability and ensure that non-monetary impacts are considered.

Obviously energy is reserved etc. but some form of local decision making is necessary to ensure that the changes made benefit people in Scotland.

Ofgem have let the people of the UK down they have allowed the price cap to increase knowing full well the catastrophic effect this will have. They are aware of tur exponential profits the oil and gas companies have made. No ofgem bring energy 8nr9 public ownership and any profit be put into research and development.

Ofgem is not fit for purpose. It needs to replaced, not duplicated.

    Not a popular idea.

    Changing the question slightly.

What should replace OfGem in Scotland?

OfGem replacement could be no better than UK version unless carefully thought out

Ofgem is a smokescreen nothing more. It needs to examine it's purpose, priorities & role. be empowered or disbanded. Presently useless.

Scotgov issued a trick when handing over regulation of heat networks to Ofgem. We already have a an experienced regulator for Scottish water and its remit should have been expanded rather than sidelined. Even Northern Ireland has its own utility regulator; responsible for oversight of electricity, gas and water industries.
There might be challenges around interfaces to Ofgem’s oversight of areas where revenues are collected on a GB basis, but Ofgem has little interest in the specific needs of our relatively small consumer base.
With control and oversight of energy legislation and industry operation, a Scottish utilities regulator could advance policies, like virtual local networks, that would allow small communities to benefit from proximity to large renewable developments.
