Climate-smart food, not just climate-smart energy: a stronger voice for fishing

We need a better evidence base and much fairer marine spatial planning that protects fisheries as marine renewables expands in Scottish waters. . Fishing must be given a much more effective voice in a much more equitable planning and consenting process. Granting the fishing industry statutory consultee status would be a good place to start.

Why the contribution is important

Clearly renewable energy will be an increasingly important part of the UK’s energy security in future. But this must not be at the cost of Scotland’s climate-smart food production – from our wild-capture fish and shellfish industry. These fisheries, which contribute to food security and support our coastal communities, have lower carbon footprints than all other types of animal protein production, and in some cases lower even than plant-based protein sources. But this is under threat from the expansion of offshore wind developments. We need a better evidence base and much fairer marine spatial planning that protects fisheries. Fishing must have a stronger and more effective voice in the planning process, and there must be more accountability in decision making. Our climate-smart food production must not be a casualty of offshore renewable energy.
