Fast-track Renewables

The Climate Emergency means we have to move away from fossil fuels asap. Russia’s war means we have to be self-sufficient in energy, therefore we must go all out to create resilience, capacity and storage solutions and fast-track development of renewables, whether wind, wave or hydrogen.

Scotland must obtain maximum benefit from this development so we need to nurture home-grown industries and local employment. Outsourcing needs to be strictly regulated to ensure massive profits do not flow overseas.

Why the contribution is important

We need to respond to the climate emergency and reduce our susceptibility to external shocks.

The European Marine Energy Centre is a Scottish company based in Orkney. It is the world's first and leading facility for demonstrating and testing wave and tidal energy technologies that generate electricity by harnessing wave power and tidal streams at sea. It is also pioneering the development of a green hydrogen economy. EMEC is supported by ScotGov and received EU funding. One of its most successful clients is Scotland-based Orbital Marine Power. It has built and operates the world's largest, most powerful, low cost floating tidal turbine, the O2. With a supply chain spanning the UK and Europe, the O2 is currently generating enough clean power in Orkney waters to meet the annual demand of over 1,700 homes. Arrays of these turbines could be part of the solution to curing the Climate Emergency.

Whatever Scotland's Just Transition eventually looks like, EMEC has all the attributes and international reputation to play a crucial role in transforming not just Scotland's energy sector but the world's. Many of us in Scotland haven't heard of EMEC and the O2 because until very recently they haven't received the government support a facility of this calibre deserves at a UK level (Contracts for Difference). Integrating EMEC into the Just Transition energy strategy will help accelerate the progress of the organisation and its clients, strengthen the diversity and output of the Scottish manufacturing/engineering sector and propel us more rapidly towards a net zero society.
