Shale gas

Lift the ban on shale gas and encourage onshore drilling for gas. Encourage use of the boreholes for geothermal energy. Use the high business rates to help fund social care. Use the extra tax from the increased employment and gas taxes to help fund the NHS

Why the contribution is important

Locally produced energy, like locally produced food, is the best energy

No we need to move away from damaging ways of producing energy. I do not agree with fracking this is not a sustainable energy source and damages the earth.

Not keen on fracking myself because by the time they come online it'd be quicker to invest in renewable technologies, green hydrogen etc. but in a time of crisis it has to be considered.

But the idea of geothermal energy is a fascinating one - a quick google showed that there have been pilot studies done that show it is feasible. Perhaps it is time to accelerate the research into these areas.

Returning to shale gas is not a good idea. We need to increase renewable energy production,
  • Posted by LJ August 25, 2022 at 20:56

However, we need a reliable source of fossil fuel whilst transitioning occurs- let’s face it, 'green' energy is not going to happen overnight and people can’t survive, particularly in the harsh Scottish climate, without an affordable, reliable energy source. This process should have been started many years ago, but governments of all parties have pushed the problem away and not wanted to address it.

The ban on fracking should be maintained for all the reasons given when it was banned.
    No U-turns please.
Let us please concentrate on all the sustainable and renewable energy sources available
and speed up and finance our research in this area

Fossil fuels are not the answer in any form, and onshore shalegas fracking most definitely isn't. I don't fear geology, but as a fracking expert (production technologist) of 25+ years I am fully aware of the risks to drinking water, the environmental damage from seepage and leakage of methane as well as frack-fluids, etc.etc. Nothing has changed: shale-gas fracking was unhelpful then, it's unhelpful now.

Poor idea - to much re. fossil fuels

Renewables are now 8 times cheaper than fossil gas. That is reason enough not to commit the next generation to more expensive energy.

Terrible idea. No new oil and gas.

Terrible idea. The fracting conversation needs to stop now. The energy, activism and heartache caused to communities and society by this debate would be more usefully channelled into something positive for society and the planet.

Shale gas wells are known to release methane in an uncontrollable manner. if not captured, methane is a highly damaging greenhouse gas.

The large number of wells required would have major repercussions for the environment. Just look at the USA. Wells ony produce for between 12 and 18 months so new wells have to be continuously drilled. This has major implications for landscape damage.

As wells are abandoned, methane continues to leak, indefinitely.

This is what we are transitioning away from
  • Posted by carolynburch September 04, 2022 at 10:29

The geothermal drilling idea is good, but to suggest more drilling for shale gas is advocating for more fossil fuel burning - just adding to the huge problems we have already created, shockingly wrong.

I am strongly against re-opening shale gas. The IEA and the IPCC have told us we must not open up new sources of fossil fuels; in fact we mustn't use all the current reserves if we are to have any chance of limiting the increase in global temperatures to close to 1.5 degrees C.

For me, a just transition for the oil and gas industry means a planned and managed winding down of oil and gas production to a fixed timetable alongside development and expansion of all renewable sources of energy and facilitating new job markets and training for those who work in the oil and gas industry.

While the impacts of fracking on Earth systems are somewhat exaggerated from a geological perspective, it doesn't make sense to continue to use fossil fuels as a short term gain. Our transition to green energy is becoming a painful one but one we need to endure to ensure we do our bit as a country to achieve net-zero.

ScotGov should oppose fracking for all the very good environmental and social reasons cited at the time. A permanent ban would be even better. At its core, the Just Transition is about moving rapidly away from every and all carbon fuels including shale gas and oil.

this is clearly a bad idea.
  • Posted by mb828590 September 07, 2022 at 06:49

Completely disagree with this proposal as it is very short sighted. We need to switch fully to renewable energy now and cut the strings with fossil fuels as these have no place in this world if we want to protect nature and our existence on this planet.
