Speed up Transition to Net Zero

Current plans for net zero are for 2045. This should be brought forward.

The current energy crisis shows how the dependence on fossil fuels can damage not only the climate but also the economy and is putting the lives of the most vulnerable people in Scotland at risk.

The increase in energy prices changes the business case for net zero - the impact of rising prices on disposable income will massively affect peoples discretionary spending which in turn impacts the overall economy.

Existing plans should be reviewed to determine which elements are now cost effective and can be brought forward and used to help to offset the increase in prices.

Why the contribution is important

Our current leader in Westminster has said that the rise in energy prices is a price worth paying due to the war in Ukraine. “While people are paying energy bills, people in Ukraine are paying with blood." He added households would “have to endure the cost-of-living crisis”

If it is a war, let us treat it like it is. Focus our efforts into ending this war by removing our dependence on fossil fuels.

Climate change is the biggest risk to the children of Scotland and what will cause them the most pain.
Now that the effects of using fossil fuels are impacting the general population there is an opportunity to use the realisation of what our dependency on fossil fuels means to push through changes today and not leave our children to pick up what is left of the world.

During the coming recession turn manufacturing capacity which will be mothballed into producing renewable energy equipment, insulation and so forth. This will create jobs reducing unemployment costs and at the same time help to drive down energy costs which will in turn reduce inflation.

Reducing the energy costs of individuals as a first step would mean that Scots have disposable income which can be spent on businesses in Scotland raising tax revenue and protecting jobs.

The situation is urgent - this is a climate crisis.
We should make huge efforts to bring this date forward.

If the Scottish government make a firm commitment to an earlier date, this would signal to industry they are ready to invest and support them.

This could lead to increased investment as any uncertainty (as we get with some wishy washy political movements that constantly change their view on this policy) would be reduced.
